Finding the right educational psychologist
Educational psychologists (EPs) are the professionals most parents encounter first when their child is struggling at school. They assess how children learn, identify barriers to progress, and recommend practical strategies that schools and families can put in place. Their reports carry significant weight in EHCP applications and tribunal appeals.
What they do
An EP will carry out a detailed cognitive and learning assessment — usually involving standardised tests, observation, and conversation with your child. They look at areas like working memory, processing speed, verbal reasoning, and reading ability. The resulting report explains your child's strengths and difficulties in clear terms, and sets out specific recommendations for their school to follow.
When to seek help
If your child is falling behind at school despite extra help, if you suspect a specific learning difficulty like dyslexia, or if you're preparing an EHCP application, an educational psychologist assessment is often essential. Many parents seek private EPs when their Local Authority has long waiting lists or when they need an independent second opinion for a tribunal.
What to expect
A full assessment typically takes 3 to 4 hours, sometimes split across two sessions. Your child will work through a series of activities and puzzles — most children find them quite engaging. You'll usually receive a written report within 2 to 3 weeks, followed by a feedback meeting to discuss the findings and next steps.
Typical costs
Private EP assessments generally range from £600 to £1,200 depending on the complexity and your location. London prices tend to sit at the higher end. Some EPs offer shorter consultations or classroom observations at lower rates. Local Authority EPs are free but often have lengthy waiting lists.
