Finding SEND support services
Beyond individual therapists and specialists, there are organisations that offer broader SEND support — advisory services, family support workers, multi-disciplinary teams, and advocacy services. These can be invaluable when you need help navigating the system, coordinating care, or simply knowing where to turn next.
What they do
SEND support services cover a wide range: SENDIASS (SEND Information, Advice and Support Services) offer free, impartial guidance on the EHCP process. Family support workers help coordinate multiple professionals. Advocacy services represent your views in meetings. Some organisations offer training for parents on topics like understanding behaviour, managing sleep difficulties, or preparing for annual reviews.
When to seek help
If you feel lost in the system, if you're not sure what your child is entitled to, if you need help preparing for a school meeting or EHCP review, or if you're in dispute with a Local Authority, these services exist to help. SENDIASS in particular is a service every parent of a child with SEND should know about — it's free, confidential, and available in every Local Authority area.
What to expect
Contact is usually by phone, email, or online referral. Many services offer ongoing casework support, not just one-off advice. They can attend meetings with you, help you understand reports and legal documents, and point you towards other relevant services. Response times vary — some services have waiting lists, but most aim to respond within a few working days.
Typical costs
SENDIASS and most Local Authority support services are free. Charity-run support services are typically free or donation-based. Some private advocacy services charge fees, usually £50 to £100 per hour for meeting attendance or report review. Always check whether a free alternative exists before paying.
